About DOC's eBikes
I'm DOC. I build mid-drive ebikes out of a real garage. This site is where I write about the parts, motors, batteries, and tools I actually own and use — and the bikes I'd actually build today.
Why this site exists
Most ebike content online is written by people who have never rebuilt a motor. They quote spec sheets, paste in stock photos, and call a Bafang BBSHD "powerful" without explaining what that means when you're climbing a 12% grade at 350 pounds total load.
I've been turning wrenches on mid-drives for four years — Bafang BBSHD and BBS02 builds, controller swaps, battery rebuilds, the Cycle Satiator on the bench. I know what torque feels like on the chain. I know which controllers melt under load. I know why a 52V battery on a 48V system is asking for trouble unless you're prepared to flash firmware.
What you'll find here:
- Owned-gear writeups — the motors, batteries, chargers, and tools sitting in my garage right now, with the receipts and the long-term wear notes.
- Mid-drive build logs — actual bikes I've put together, with parts lists, torque values, and the mistakes I made so you don't have to.
How I write
- I write about gear I own. If I don't own it, I don't write a review of it.
- I read manufacturer spec sheets and the FCC filings (which often disagree).
- For comparison context, I'll reference units I've ridden at shops or on demo days — and I'll tell you that's what it is.
- AI helps me draft and research. I review every piece before it goes live. The byline says "DOC" because I stand behind it.
How this site makes money
Affiliate commissions when you click a link and buy. It doesn't cost you a cent extra, and it doesn't change my rankings. See the full affiliate disclosure.
I'd rather you click the right link and not feel ripped off than click the wrong link and never come back.
What I won't do
- Sponsored reviews disguised as editorial
- Write up gear I haven't actually used
- Quote specs I can't verify
- Pretend hub drives are the same as mid-drives (they aren't, and pretending otherwise is how people end up disappointed)
