About DOC's eBikes
I'm DOC. I build mid-drive ebikes out of a real garage. This site is where I review the ebikes I'd actually buy from Amazon — and the parts I'd actually use in a custom build.
Why this site exists
Most ebike reviews online are written by people who have never rebuilt a motor. They quote spec sheets, paste in stock photos, and call a Bafang BBSHD "powerful" without explaining what that means when you're climbing a 12% grade at 350 pounds total load.
I've been turning wrenches on mid-drives for four years — Bosch Performance Line, Bafang BBSHD and BBS02, the Specialized SL system. I know what torque feels like on the chain. I know which controllers melt under load. I know why a 52V battery on a 48V system is asking for trouble unless you're prepared to flash firmware.
But most people don't need a custom build. They need a $1,500 commuter that ships from Amazon Prime and doesn't fall apart in eight months. So this site does two things at once:
- Authority reviews of Amazon ebikes — Lectric, Aventon, Heybike, Velotric, Ride1Up. I tell you which ones are real and which are dropshipped junk.
- Mid-drive build logs — the actual bikes I've put together, with parts lists, torque values, and the mistakes I made so you don't have to.
How I review
- I read manufacturer spec sheets and the FCC filings (which often disagree).
- I read 50+ verified-purchase reviews per product to find the real failure patterns.
- For flagships, I find local owners or get demo time at shops. If I haven't ridden it, I tell you.
- AI helps me draft and research. I review every piece before it goes live. The byline says "DOC" because I stand behind it.
How this site makes money
Affiliate commissions when you click a link and buy. It doesn't cost you a cent extra, and it doesn't change my rankings. See the full affiliate disclosure.
I'd rather you click the right link and not feel ripped off than click the wrong link and never come back.
What I won't do
- Sponsored reviews disguised as editorial
- Recommend a bike I wouldn't ride myself
- Quote specs I can't verify
- Pretend hub drives are the same as mid-drives (they aren't, and pretending otherwise is how people end up disappointed)
